As a connection to my personal life, specific things and places affect me and my personality as I have developed through my lifetime. Each piece of artwork brings emphasis to this idea, which gives reason for this exhibition to be titled as Predispose. Predispose means that the specific event or thing causes a significant change in the actions and emotions of a person after the event occurs. In relation to current times, religion and family has the greatest effect on young people because of the authority that is over the young people, so they act like the older people when they are around them for a long period of time. My life, in particular, is influenced greatly by my family and the leaders of my church because those are the people I spend most of my time with. As a result, it has affected my emotions over the last four years of my life. The display of these artworks gives honor to these people in my life because it has expanded the memories that I have created with the special people in my life. All the pieces include a summary of my life, the beginning of the four year time period, trips with my family, and trips with my church that impacted my life as they surround a sculpture of myself beside a tree as a representation of my personal growth along with my technical growth from the first artworks displayed in the exhibition.
When the viewer enters into the exhibition, their focus is centered around the sculpture of myself on a pedestal as the events and things that have influenced me are surrounded around the sculpture. Once the viewer recognizes the connection between me and the artworks, they begin to follow their way to the left wall where four horizontal walls extend from the two vertical walls. On the first wall on the left, there is a surrealist piece that summarizes the things that change a person’s daily life from purchasing their first car to becoming a positive influence to other people. As the viewer continues clockwise around the room, they see multiple artworks that connect to my life through chronological order that starts with the beginning of my high school experience. These places include personal experiences, trips with my family, and trips I have taken to expand my religious attributes with people of the same faith. As the viewer makes their way around the room, they view the artworks as they surround the sculpture, but once they view the artworks they return back to the sculpture. Through the chronological order there is a change in light and saturation as there is a presence of increased confidence and happiness from the first artwork that surrounds the sculpture that is displayed with charcoal to the pastel drawing. When the viewer recenters to the sculpture, there is a realization of growth from the first to the last artwork that is represented within the tree next to the main figure while there are leaves on the wood as a representation of the difficult times I have experienced in my life.
As an exhibition as a whole, the viewer will experience the significance of my life and the things that have affected me the most. Portraying my life to other people helps me display to other people the things that make me happy, so they can compare them to their own preferences. Within each artwork, however, I display different points of views from different perspectives, so that the understanding is available to any viewer. The name of the exhibition is Predispose as a representation of the things that have influenced me and influenced other people at the same time.
